Saga Prefecture today includes not only the old Saga Domain but also the Karatsu Domain, the Tashiro Territory of Tsushima Domain, and a Shogunate-government-ruled territory. The Karatsu Domain was around where Karatsu City is now, in the northern part of Saga Prefecture. Ogasawara Nagamichi, the adopted son of the last Karatsu Domain lord Ogasawara Nagakuni, was called to Edo and given a high government post where he worked hard to support the Shogunate government. This put the Karatsu Domain in a difficult position after the Meiji Restoration. On the other hand, a part of the Tsushima Domain, based in Tsushima of Nagasaki, was located around the current Tashiro area of Tosu City located in the eastern part of Saga Prefecture. When the Russian warship Posadnik invaded Tsushima in 1861, a troop of 316 samurai was dispatched to aid in the fighting.
