30Picture of Saga Domain Seirenkata

This drawing depicts Seirenkata, the research institute for industrial technology set up in Tafuse in 1852 by the Saga Domain. Here, many highly skilled people were gathered from within and without the domain, including Sano Tsunetami, who later established the Japanese Red Cross Society, and Tanaka Hisashige, who founded the company that later became Toshiba, to conduct research in physics and science, experimental production of machinery, and steam engine research. The center of the picture shows a test drive of the steam engine model, and on the lower right a steamboat model can be seen; these research achievements later led to the creation of the steamboat, Ryōfūmaru.
