The title Master of Traditional Crafts is awarded to artisans who possess outstanding skills in the production of traditional crafts designated by the Japanese government. Masters of Traditional Crafts are not only highly accomplished artisans but also play a vital role in preserving and passing on traditional skills and culture, and in transmitting their skills to future generations.

The Kyushu Shinkougei (New Craft Art) Exhibition showcases not only ceramic works, but also bamboo art, textile dyeing, and figurative works by members of the Kyushu Shinkougei Association, associate members, and open-call participants.

Smile Pop-up Market at Kyushu Ceramic Museum!

A pop-up market featuring food and crafts made by people with disabilities will be held at the museum. A variety of items will be available for purchase, including apple pie, lemongrass, retort-pouch curry, dried fruits, and handmade crafts such as bags.
Come and enjoy shopping for heartfelt products created with care.

Arita, located in Saga Prefecture, is the birthplace of porcelain in Japan. In this historic town, ceramic works from around the world will be gathered for public appreciation, aiming to foster the exchange of techniques, improve quality and design, and promote the transmission of traditional crafts, as well as the development of the ceramic industry.

Exhibition Concept

The theme this time is "color".

"Color" meaning the visual hue, and "color" meaning the distinctive qualities of each exhibitor.

We aim to create a vibrant and visually compelling exhibition that showcases each kiln's distinctive qualities and features works rich in color.

We will also present works by students from Saga University, as in previous years.

We update our displays of our permanent exhibitions showcasing ceramics from Kyushu and Okinawa spanning the Edo period to modern times, alongside works by contemporary ceramic artists active throughout kyushu. The museum regularly rotates its exhibits.

This time, we have completely replaced the collection of old ceramics from various regions of Kyushu, including Karatsu ware and Nabeshima ware from Saga Prefecture, Hasami ware and Mikawachi ware from Nagasaki Prefecture, Takatori ware and Agano ware from Fukuoka Prefecture, Yatsushiro ware and Shodai ware from Kumamoto Prefecture, and Satsuma ware from Kagoshima Prefecture. Additionally we have replaced some pieces from the contemporary collection, including works by members of the Japan Art Academy and holders of Important Intangibble Cultural Properties (Living National Treasures).

Each venue will also showcase rare pieces not usually seen, offering a glimpse into the history passed down over many years. Please take this opportunity to experience Japanese tradition.
