White Porcelain Crowned Cassowary and Fountain

This monument was gifted to Arita Town by the City of Meissen located in the former German Democratic Republic (the present Federal Republic of Germany) in commemoration of the establishment of sister-city relations in 1987.

The original model of the bird was made by Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706-1775), a famed ceramist in Meissen, in 1731 and this replica was made at the National Meissen Porcelain Manufactory in 1985.

The monument features a life-size model of the crowned cassowary, a large bird resembling the ostrich.
The crossed-sword symbol near its hind legs is the mark of the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory.
