Arita Ware Karakuri Musical Clock

This Arita ware musical clock lights up, and opens its big dial (70cm diameter) every 30 minutes to reveal a circus show with rolling balls inside the clockwork for a three-minute dreamlike performance.
The gears, pendulum and figures of children in the interior of the clock, as well as the clock numbers and pillars were all produced in a combined effort by major kilns in Arita.
The scrolling vines and repeating patterns on the gears are reminiscent of the concept of time, while figures of children were adorned with various traditional patterns commonly seen in Arita ware. The nostalgic figures change with the season, as do the children's songs composed by Nakada Yoshinao and Nakada Akira.
