KIMG0001_190490_marked[1].jpgIn the 2020 fiscal year, caption labels and description panels of the Mr. and Mrs. Shibata Collection which has a total of 4332 sets, have been entirely translated into English and newly improved to provide international visitors with sufficient information under the subsidy project sponsored by the Agency for Cultural Affairs.

Object titles are broadly divided into three parts: 1. Shape, 2. Design, and 3. Type. We unified and standardized the English terms and words in the collection to create an English-Japanese word comparison list which corresponds to the three parts, making them simple and easy to understand.

In this project, numerous words relevant to ceramics have been translated into English such as 'decoration patterns' and 'types of objects.' We hope these materials will help in the advancements of ceramic culture in Kyushu. The lists are as follows:

<Supervised and Cooperated by>
Professor Nicole Coolidge Rousmaniere, Research Director of the Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures
Uchida Hiromi, Former Project Manager in the Japanese Section of the Department of Asia at the British Museum
Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan
