Feb 22, 2025

Kyushu Ceramic Museum now exhibits approximately 1,000 items from the more than 10,000 pieces of Arita ware donated by Mr. and Mrs. Shibata in the Exhibition Room 2, "Mr. and Mrs. Shibata Collection".

The Mr. and Mrs. Shibata Collection is an outstanding collection of Arita ware, incomparable anywhere in the world, systematically and comprehensively collected by Akihiko and Yuko Shibata from the Edo period, and is the first cultural property to be registered as a Tangible Cultural Property (craft) by the Japanese Government.

The exhibition has now replaced approximately 700 of the items on display, including dishes associated with Akihiko and Yuko Shibata, such as a dish depicting three shrimps with fine lines and skillful blurred dami, and a small deformed dish in the shape of a chrysanthemum flower using the "Itokiri-Zaiku" technique, which trace the changes in the design and techniques of Arita ware during the Edo period. The works on display trace the evolution of Arita ware patterms and techniques during the Edo period.

Please take this opportunity to visit the exhibition.
We look forward to welcoming many visitors.
