Permanent Display:The Mr. & Mrs. Shibata Collection - Around 800 Works Updated -
Mar 26, 2026
The Kyushu Ceramic Museum displays about 1,000 works selected from more than 10,000 items donated to the museum in Exhibition Room 2, "The Mr. & Mrs. Shibata Collection".
This remarkable Arita porcelain collection was assembled comprehensively and systematically, and is highly regarded as an invaluable scholarly resource with no parallel in the world.
We have recently rotated approximately 800 works in our exhibition. The exhibition features works that trace the evolution of Arita ware patterns and techniques during the Edo period, including works with personal connections to Akihiko and Yuko Shibata, such as a dish from the Enpo era depicting two sweetfish rendered with fine lines and skillful shading, and an irregularly shaped dish featuring charming cherry blossoms painted in underglaze cobalt blue on a folded-paper motif created using the itokiri-zaiku technique.
Please take this opportunity to visit the exhibition. We look forward to welcoming many visitors.
