Nakazato Hōan Works Collection

Nakazato Hōan Works Collection consists of 13 pieces of ceramic art works by Nakazato Hōan (1923-2009), owned by Kyushu Ceramic Museum.
He was a member of the Japan Art Academy, and has played a significant role not only for the Karatsu ware field but across boundaries, actively worked as one of the representatives of the ceramic artists in Japan. He also had enormous achievements as a researcher, obtained a doctoral degree for the research of the origin of the paddle technique of Karatsu ware.
In December 2009, the 14th generation of Nakazato Tarouemon (Nakazato Tadahiro), son of Nakazato Hōan donated 11 pieces of Hōan’s works to the Kyushu Ceramic Museum. The collection is his representative works from 1977 to 2001 after he succeeded to the name of the 13th generation of Nakazato Tarouemon.

Short Biography of Nakazato Hoan

1923 (Taisho 12) Born as the first son of the 12th generation of Nakazato Tarouemon in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture.
1943 (Showa 18) Graduated from the Craft Design Course, Tokyo High School of Crafts (present day Faculty of Engineering, Chiba University).
1951 (Showa 26) Selected for the 7th Japan Arts Exhibition for his Tocho work (ceramic sculpture), "Ushi" (cow) for the first time.
1956 (Showa 31) Awarded the Hokuto Award at the 12th Japan Arts Exhibition for his work " Tou・Tataki Mishima Flower Vase (Mishima style paddled flower vase with inlaid design).
1958 (Showa 33) Awarded the Special Commendation at the first Nitten Exhibition for his work, paddled jar "Ushi" (cow).
1961 (Showa 36) Awarded the Japan Ceramic Society Award for his work "Tsubo" (jar) that was selected at the third Nitten Exhibition.
1969 (Showa 44) Succeeded to the name of the 13th Nakazato Tarouemon.
1981 (Showa 56) Awarded the Prime Minister's Award at the 13th Nitten Exhibition for his work "Tataki Karatsu Mishima Jar with Handles" (paddled jar with handles and inlaid design).
1984 (Showa 59) Awarded the Japan Art Academy Award for his work "Tataki Karatsu Vase with Handles" (paddled vase with handles) that was entered the 15th Nitten Exhibition.
1985 (Showa 60) Awarded the Saga Prefecture "Geijutsu bunka koro sho" (The Award Art and Cultural Distinguished Service by Saga Prefecture).
1992 (Heisei 4) Designated as a Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property of Saga Prefecture.
1995 (Heisei 7) Awarded the "Karatsu City koro sho" (The Award Distinguished Service by Karatsu City).
1997 (Heisei 9) Awarded the Medal with Dark Blue Ribbon.
1999 (Heisei 11) Awarded the Medal with Dark Blue Ribbon
2002 (Heisei 14)

Entered the Buddhist priesthood at Kyoto Daitoku-ji Temple and received the dharma name "Hoan."

2004 (Heisei 16)

Obtained a doctoral degree for his paper "Research of Karatsu ware."

2007 (Heisei 19) Became a member of the Japan Art Academy.
2008 (Heisei 20) Awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon. Appointed an adviser of the Japan Art Academy.
2009 (Heisei 21)

Passed away on March 12. Given "Shogoi" (Senior Fifth Rank).
