40th Anniversary / Special Commemorative Exhibition:
The Shibasawa Collection
Exhibition Outline
The Kyushu Ceramic Museum, which opened on November 1, 1980, will mark the 40th anniversary of its founding in 2020. The Museum has earned praise from within and outside Japan for its research into the ancient ceramics of Kyushu, primarily in the Hizen region. Through this track record of research, it earned the trust of owners and collectors, who have made generous donations as a result. This exhibition is being held to commemorate the donation of the collection of the late Shibasawa Kazuhito, who enthusiastically collected antique art over many years. Donations in 2016 and 2019 brought the Shibasawa Collection, which consists of 432 objects encompassing 1,179 separate pieces, to the Museum. Edo-period Hizen porcelain (Ko-Imari) that was introduced to Niigata Prefecture and Yamagata Prefecture and subsequently collected by Mr. Shibasawa, for example during visits to old residences and antique art dealers in the region, lie at the heart of the collection and make it unique. This exhibition provides an overview of the collection, which consists primarily of a large number of diverse Hizen porcelain pieces that were shipped to coastal areas of northeastern Japan via the Sea of Japan during the Edo period.
